About macs@work

macs@work is a family business in Muskoka. It is owned and operated by Meg and Jamie Jordan and the constant companionship of their superdog, Tupper. Craig Thornton, with over 15 years of Mac experience, joined our team in early 2006. If you're in North Bay area, contact Denis, our Blue Sky Region representative. Our business is about building bridges between ordinary people and computers. Macintosh computers have empowered each member of our family in different ways.

Along with Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, we see the computer primarily as a facilitator of human creativity and intuition.. Whether you operate a business or use your computer for purely personal resons, if you choose Macintosh we are committed to empowering your choice.

We've been serving people here in Muskoka since 1992. We are an Apple VAR (Value Added Reseller) and an Authorized Apple Service Provider. We offer computer solutions for individuals and businesses all over Ontario.

The fabulously innovative products that Apple has released recently, have brought many new customers to our store. To our delight, many summer residents have also decided to deal with us as well. Portable computing is fast becoming a way of life that is helping many hard working individuals stay in touch with their offices while moving to the cottage for the summer. We provide the kind of support that makes that choice possible.

Why Macintosh?

In 1984, Apple Computer introduced the world to Macintosh and we became proud owners of one of the first 128K models. It was one of the best things we ever did. We now choose to sell only Macintosh, because it is quite simply the best computer on the market. We are dedicated to making sure that the Macintosh choice is always available.

Right from the beginning the creators of Macintosh have had vision, passion and a commitment to excellence. And because the excellence continues to be born out of passion for the vision, there continue to be good reasons to choose Macintosh.

When Bill Gates first saw a Macintosh he is reported to have returned to Microsoft saying "...that is the future of computing. We have got to build an operating system like that." Windows is his best attempt at emulating the Macintosh OS. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, or as has been said, "to see the future of PC computing look at this year's Macintosh!"

Macintosh has many advantages over other computer systems. Most PC and Windows users are simply not aware of the advantages. In fact, there are a lot of false ideas that are spread by so called computer experts who have never used a Macintosh. These ideas are more like beliefs or prejudices, not trustworthy information. We call them PC Myths about Mac. If you want to know more, keep reading.

PC Myths about the Macintosh

Everyone Tells Me that I Should Buy A PC

Well, it depends on how much time you really want to spend learning how to use a computer. If you're the type who loves to understand how your car works then Windows might be for you. If you don't care how it works and getting from A to B is the important thing, then at least consider Macintosh.

If you want a computer that's easy to use - one that you can set up and start using right away, then buy a Mac. If you want a challenge then consider this quote from CNN's Rare Glitch Project - the "legendary search for a stable version of Windows": "...no matter how frantically and frequently Microsoft upgrades or fixes or replaces or enhances its operating system the damned thing crashes and crashes and crashes..."

At a local High School that has both a Macintosh and Windows lab, the supervisor of the Windows lab once confided to us that he envied the head of the Macintosh lab." I spend all my time keeping the machines and the network running. He spends all of his time learning new software and helping the students."

But We Use PC's At the Office

It's like saying that since Ford makes all your company's fleet of vehicles, you need to buy a Ford yourself. For those of you who need to work at home, Macs have software that can read files that were created on PC's. Some examples are Microsoft Word, Excel, MYOB, and Filemaker databases. This means that you can eMail a file to yourself; open it at home on your Mac and keep on working.
They Say That Apple Won't Be Around Much Longer

"They've" been saying that for over 20 years. One look at Apple's recent stock prices says it all. Apple is here to stay! Look at an iMac or a Intel system and then ask yourself if these are products made by a company that's going out of business.

Apple's laptop sales are very strong as reported Steve Jobs at MacWorld 2006. Apple doubled it's North American market share from 6% to 12% during previous fiscal half.

During the last 2 years Apple has managed to break even or post a profit while nearly every other manufacturer of computers have been posting losses. Steve Jobs has commited Apple to innovating it's way out of this slow period.

There's No Software for Macs

Don't ever let anyone try to get that one past you. It's an outright lie. Check out the Macintosh Product Guide. As of this date (December 21st, 2006) there are over 23,000 software titles listed. More are being added every day. Many are being ported over from other UNIX platforms like Linux.

One of the reasons you might believe this myth is the amount of shelf space devoted to Macintosh software in many large computer stores. The PC area is huge. The Macintosh area seems tiny by comparison. But take a closer look at each CD. More than half of the titles are for both Windows AND Macintosh.

Finally, think for a moment about innovation. Did you know that Excel was a Macintosh first and for a while a Macintosh only programme? The same is true of PageMaker, Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop, Quark Express, Quicken, MYOB, Filemaker, Final Cut Pro, iMovie and the Macintosh operating system itself.

Macs Are More Expensive

At one time that may have held true but not any longer. The low end Macintosh systems are as inexpensive as low end PCs using the Celeron chip. But the Macs are using high end Intel Core 2 Duo processors. Everything is built into a Mac: GB Ethernet, Stereo Speakers, USB 2, Firewire, Airport & Bluetooth and tons of fabulous software.

Finally, in business, you should count the after purchase costs of installation, networking, training and ongoing maintenance as part of the cost of the computer. Macintosh costs are invariably about 30% cheaper per year when compared to PCs!

There are No Apple Products in the Schools

Many school boards are Mac only and most have a mixture of PCs and Macintosh computers. Many careers such as desktop publishing, graphic design, sound engineering and video editing are dominated by Macintosh computers.
